Greece has experienced a number of struggles both inner and outer. Wars among other nations and between various city-states often occured. Alexander the Great took power shortly after the Persian takeover in Greece in 336 BC. He then expanded his empire until the Roman Empire took over in 145 BC. In 1453 AD the Byzantine empire takes over Greece again making once wealthy Athens a poor city-state. Greeks gain independence from the Ottoman empire in the early 1800s, and in 1913 Greece gains power over turkish controlled land in the Balkan war. Greece became a member of NATO in 1952, formed a new constitution of the Republic of Greece in 1975, and now operates under both a president and prime minister.
